About this tool
AVIF gives outstanding compression, but plenty of software still cannot open it. This tool decodes AVIF in your browser and re-encodes it as JPG, PNG or WebP so the picture works everywhere — photo printers, older phones, desktop editors and anything else that predates the format.

Quality & file size
Lossy formats (JPEG, WebP, AVIF) trade detail for smaller files as you lower the quality; PNG stays lossless regardless of the slider. The tool always shows the original and result sizes so you can judge the trade-off, and it never recommends a result that is larger than your original as an “optimisation”.
Privacy
Every image is decoded, transformed and re-encoded entirely in your browser using the Canvas API and a Web Worker. Files are never uploaded, are not stored in localStorage, and are cleared from memory when you remove them or close the page.

Common issues & limitations
- The output will normally be larger than the AVIF — that is the cost of compatibility.
- Animated AVIF is reduced to its first frame.
- All processing happens on your device; nothing is uploaded, so very large batches are limited by your available memory.
Frequently asked questions
Why can I not open AVIF files?
AVIF is a recent format. Browsers support it well, but plenty of desktop apps, photo printers and older phones still do not. Converting to JPG removes that problem.
Will the JPG be bigger than the AVIF?
Almost certainly. AVIF is one of the most efficient formats available, so the same picture as a JPG is often two to three times larger. That is the price of compatibility.
Does my browser need to support AVIF?
It needs to decode AVIF, which every current browser does. Encoding to AVIF is a separate capability and is checked independently on the JPG-to-AVIF tool.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Every image is decoded, processed and encoded entirely inside your browser using the Canvas API. The files never leave your device and are discarded when you close the page.
